Daisuke Kimukimu

1998- Born in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka

2020-Graduated from Musashino Art University, Majoring in Oil Painting

2020-currently enrolled at Musashino Art University, School of Printmaking


He produces works without corners in copperplate prints and illustrations.




――How long have you been exposed to art?

I have been taking painting classes since I was in kindergarten.

When I was in junior high school, I took an entrance exam and entered a high school specializing in art, and majored in design. So, for four years of high school, I spent my life in art. Then I entered the Department of Spatial Design at Musashino Art University.

There were four departments within the Department of Spatial Design (Kuudeh), and fashion was the one I was most interested in. KUDET is a department of fine arts, which includes oil painting and Japanese painting, but it is a mix of fine arts and design.


――Is there anything that led you to your current activities?

It all started when I was in my second year of university at the Musashimei Art Festival.

I sold goods by myself. It was the first time for me to run a store under the title "Milky Milk."

At that time, I made a sweatshirt using silkscreen. It was like a small solo exhibition, with illustrations and such. That event made me want to go into the two-dimensional world more and more. The art festival led me to change my major to printmaking in my third year of college.



――Could you tell us more about why you decided to major in printmaking?

I was originally making three-dimensional works for my KUADEC project, but I had a yearning for two-dimensional works, and I also had a feeling that I had done everything I could at KUADEC. When I thought about the future, I decided that I wanted to do two-dimensional work. I also wanted to learn techniques at university, so I decided on printmaking. From there, I studied printmaking for two years.


――Do you have a motif for your work?

The motif of my work is a theme that I have consistently followed since my first year at Musashino Art University. It is the theme of "eliminating corners". I have a kind of rule in what I make. At that time, I naturally decided on my own, and I wondered when I came up with this idea. ...... That's the motif. The culmination of this is in my graduation project.



――How do you go about making your work?

When I make a work for an exhibition, I make things as they come, and after that, I decide how to arrange them. So I either think about how to display the work later, or I try to think about it all at the same time. It's like now that I've made this one, I'll make this one, too, while I'm making the works, they connect each other and I come up with the idea of an exhibition. I don't want to be too rigid from the start. In the case of copperplate, I cut the shapes, make a lot of molds, and start drawing at once. I don't do any drafting.



――Do you need inspiration?

I think it's important....... I get a lot of questions like this on Instagram, but I'm always confused. I feel like it's risky to get inspiration from other people's work. It's fine if you can digest it in your mind, but I think there are people who can't process it well and end up writing with the same matrix. In today's information society, I think this is inevitable. I think it's important to have inspiration while keeping that in mind.


――Where do you get your inspiration?

I think I'm very self-centered. For example, I get inspiration from movies. Things I see in my life. I want to trust my own eyes. I always get confused with this question too.


――Do you have any difficulties?

I self-promote everything, so I do my own advertising and package the goods I sell at POPUPs. I'm at the stage where I have to do everything on my own, so I'm sure people don't realize this. I enjoy what I do, but if you look at my friends who are artists, you will see that there is a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes, and I think a lot of difficulties lay behind the scenes of what goes on in the world.
