MAILLOT 『Create a new culture』1/2

【Profile】

-MAILLOT - based in Sydney.

MAILLOT is here to encourage young people to feel comfortable with what they like, and provide the most diverse range of street fashion to suit their needs.

At the same time, MAILLOT is determined to provide the most common elements that all customers are after when it comes to fashion - Quality. They are committed to select the best brands in the world.

―――What’s the concept?

MAILLOT is about bringing diversity and different styles to a country, and we focus on unisex, so it’s a place that everyone can be who they are. We are encouraging people to find a place that suits their identity, and more like people use us to express themselves. It’s not just about logos, big brands, and stuff, there are a lot more things out there. So we want everyone to choose whatever suits them.

―――So your focus is more than clothes.

Yes, we mainly focus on streetwear, but there are actually different types of streetwear but there are some stereotypes of wearing streetwear as well, so we try to bring everything in and to create MAILLOT.

―――What does MAILLOT mean?

It means a Shirt in French. Everyone needs a shirt, men need a shirt, women need a shirt, it can be worn in any scene. So we are here to provide the things they need and we want to be a place where everyone needs just like they need a shirt.

―――Where do you get the inspiration for your shop?

As a shop, interiors, there are inspired by nature, as you can see we use a lot of wood, greens, trees and we want to combine fashion and nature because humans are part of nature. Also all of our interiors are either handmade or antique, so we pick every single thing, even for incense, we combine a different kind of incense to create a vibe of MAILLOT. So when people come in, they will be like ‘oo This is MAILLOT’. (laugh)

Alison: you agree? (laugh)

Aiden: Yeah yeah, exactly (laugh)

―――Why did you choose Sydney? any reason?

First of all, we are from Asia but live in Sydney now and I have travelled a lot to find something different because people always wear similar things. So I always shop overseas or online, and I always wanted to have a shop that provides different cultures and different goods and stuff in Sydney as well.

―――Yes, I agree, Australia has a culture but it’s hard to find when it comes to fashion.

Do you see any difference when you compare shops, customer behaviour, or selections in Asia and Australia?

I think it’s a cultural thing. In Australia, because it’s a multicultural country, people here have many different backgrounds, so people are demanding different things. So we can not really focus on one thing or style, but for everyone. But in Asia, because most people are from the same country, in retail, they can focus on one style more than here because people will like that. So I think that’s a challenge for us as well.
