――Do you prefer film or digital photography?

It goes both ways. Basically, I shoot digitally, and when I think film is better, I shoot on film. But I shoot more with digital cameras. I like to process the photos after I've taken them, so I think of it as a photographic process from the moment I take them to the moment I process them.

――When did you start photography?

When I was 18 .

――How did it all start?

My father is a photographer, so I've been familiar with cameras since I was little, and my house was also our studio, so we were taking Shichi-Go-San at home and so on. Also, my father always had a camera with him, and I was always interested in photography since I was a kid, but I didn't take a picture with it properly until I was 18. My father gave me his camera, which led me to join a photography club, and as I took different kinds of pictures, I learned how to use a camera.

――When you shoot, do you have a clear image of how you want to take the picture?

It's a feeling. I think the best thing to do is to get in front of the subject, and when you're doing a lot of preparation beforehand, it's often a bad aftertaste. I look at the location and the way the light comes in, and then I take the picture.

――I heard that you have been making frames as well. What was your motive for doing this?

I made the frames for my friend's exhibition, and that was quite fun, and that's when I started thinking, I'd like to do this in the future. I used wood and scrap wood from my parents' house as materials.

――How do you make your work?

Photography is often a challenge on the spot. If I'm taking portraits, the way I approach the work changes on the spot because I have a different relationship with the persons and so on. In the case of making things, I have a clear image of who I'm making the work for, or what the object is, so I make it according to that clear image.

――Do you need inspiration?

Of course I think I need inspiration.

――What do you get inspiration from?

When it comes to photography, I think light and shadows are the biggest things. I often take photos of light and shadows unconsciously. As for making things, I've only ever made frames, but I grew up in nature, and my father used to make his own frames when he had photo exhibitions, so I think I get inspiration from the environment that I'm in.

――Do you have any difficulties?

I haven't had any major setbacks or anything like that yet, and I don't know if I will or not or I don't even realize it (laughs).
